Efeso Collins during his time

In memory of Fa’anānā Efeso Collins

Last week New Zealanders were shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden death of Green Party MP Faʻanānā Efeso Collins. Efeso devoted his life to serving his community, firstly as President of the Auckland University Students’ Association (AUSA) and subsequently as a youth worker, broadcaster and head of the University of Auckland’s Pacific student outreach programme. Best known for his work in local politics, Efeso served as an Auckland Councillor from 2013 to 2021 and was a passionate advocate for the Pacific community in his beloved South Auckland.

In 2022, despite death threats directed towards himself and his family, he stood for the Auckland Mayoralty and although ultimately unsuccessful, his ardent desire to combat inequality and poverty in Auckland resonated with many voters. In 2023, Efeso was elected to Parliament on the Green Party list and made his maiden speech just six days before his death. Never afraid to speak his mind, but always respectful and willing to learn and change, Efeso will be missed by a huge number of New Zealanders for his reasoned, compassionate approach and for his genuine desire to facilitate a positive change in society.

TV and Radio has compiled a playlist of some of Efeso’s more memorable interviews, which showcase his tireless commitment to the community.
